Are French Bulldogs Lazy?

French Bull Dogs:

French bull dogs often known to be adaptable for apartment living was a cross breed originated in late 1800s from native small dogs and small bull dogs of toy variety. These dogs are very sensitive, calm and friendly but little stubborn.

CHARACTERISTICS:

They are small to medium in size with extremely short nose and unique shape of ears known as “Bat ears”. French bulldogs are commonly known as ‘Frenchies’. French Bull dogs may have different colors including fawn, tan, white and brindle and of mixed colors. This breed is non- sporting and its lifespan was known to be 10-12 years. Their ideal weight was less than 28 pounds.

WHY FRENCH DOES ARE CHARACTERIZED AS LAZY?

People always characterize French bulldogs as lazy and inactive but it is not so true. They may seem to be very lazy as they sleep almost 60% of the day. This may surprise you but the truth is French bull dogs sleep almost 13-16 hours a day. Small puppies need more sleep than this; they may sleep up to 20 hours a day. This leave only few hours awake but they are very hyper active when awake and needs more attention and stimulation. It is known that Frenchies have more mood swings and they may feel depressed often. So, they must be handled carefully with more love and affection to make them feel secured.

DOES SLEEPING OFTEN MADE THEM AS LAZY BREED?

Sleeping for longest hours may be one of the major reasons that made Frenchies as lazy breed which made people believe they need more stimulation to be active. But there are many reasons they made their breed to be lazy and inactive.

  1. FRENCHIES ARE VERY STUBBORN

They are very much stubborn with its own pace of living. If they don’t want to walk they will never get up also to exactly opposite if they decide to run they would never stop running until they decide to stop themselves. This always leaves their owners confusing about their behavior. They are over attached to their owners that may cause anxiety in dogs when they are separated from them.

  • BECOME MORE LAZY WHEN THEY TEND TO AGE

It’s true that French bull dogs become lazier when they age. Soon after they start to age they become less reactive and they start to walk slowly. They start preferring more nap sessions than before.

More care and attention must be given to the dogs when they start to age so as to keep them safe and healthy. Frequent exercise and walking can make them fell energetic.

  • COMPARITIVELY MORE WEIGHT

Most of the Frenchies are over-weight which made people to feel that they are over weighed dogs but it’s not true. It may be due to lack of exercise and proper diet. As they sleep most of the time proper care should be taken regarding their diet and exercise to maintain their weight.

  • NEED MORE PHYSICAL AND MENTAL STIMULATION

As French bulldogs are cozy and sleepy all day, it’s very much essential to stimulate them both physically and mentally to make them brisk and active. If not it may lead to various genetic breathing problems and overweight. It is much necessary to train them with various mind games and frequent walking sessions.

  • BREATHING PROBLEMS

French bull dogs have squashed face features that cause various breathing problems. They are known to be brachycephalic breed and they find very difficult to cool down itself in hot weather while other breeds easily cool down by panting themselves.

We must be careful while taking them for long walk or exercise sessions as they may find difficult to breathe when trained for long hours.

  • PRONE TO MANY INFECTIONS

        It is not that only sleepiness may be the reason for Frenchies to be lazy, they are easily affected by various infections especially yeast infections that may make them lazy. They are mostly affected by heart and liver diseases, hyperthyroidism, respiratory diseases and food poisoning. These breeds of dogs have very sensitive stomachs that take more time to digest the food than normal breeds. This must be taken in a serious note to give more nutritious and easy digestible foods to prevent them from food poisoning.

These are some of the underlying facts that make French bull dogs behave lazy and inactive. However taking proper care and exercise can make them active irrespective of the natural trait.

ARE THEY BORN LAZY?

A big NO. There are several facts and natural features of Frenchies that made us consider them as lazy. But it is said that they can match their energy levels as their owners. If we are active they try their best to match our energy levels and also if we seem to be lazy they start to behave lazy very easily. This is one of the interesting fact about Frenchies and also most of the people agreed to this.

Certain features including their breed, physical features made them lazy but for the people who want their dogs to be very attached and friendly towards them, then French bull dogs are very good option to go. And also they love to be cuddled so much which added as advantage for the dog lovers as some breed of dogs doesn’t like cuddling.

CARING CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE:

Whatever the breed of dog may be proper care and handling is very much important to maintain the dog. French bull dogs may need little more attention as they always want to be cuddled to feel secured. And also they are cutest and friendly when we have kids in our home. Constant exercise and stimulation can make them energetic and active. We can categorize a dog to be lazy without knowing their underlying genetic traits. Every breed is unique in own way and also has their negative sides.

ARE FRENCH BULLDOGS LAZY?

It’s not that Frenchies are lazy, it may be born in that way but giving proper exercise and diet can make them active and it is completely the owner’s responsibility to do so. Complaining that they are lazy is not the correct way to make them happy. Giving more care can make a big change in their energy levels.
